The 101st edition of the Giro has produced another stunning spectacle of the sport and has managed to keep spectators from around the globe on the edge of their seats for the last 3 weeks.
True to form and in similar fashion to last years edition, the race for GC podiums is going down to the wire, “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings”!
Simon Yates has ridden a phenomenal race so far, punching well above his weight in terms of experience. Stage 18 is a day that he will want to forget though, as he ‘cracked’ in the last 2km of the stage! He saw his GC lead cut in half and the gap back to Dumoulin is now just 28 seconds. The stage belonged to the breakaway and the #WolfPack (Team Quickstep Floors) gathered another win to add to their trophy cabinet for 2018. With stage 19 and 20 both being two big mountain stages, it sure does make for an exciting end to three weeks of racing! Froome may be sitting 4th on GC and over 3 minutes down, but don’t count him out as he has stuck to his guns from the start saying that the winner of this years Giro will come from a strong performance in the final week of the tour!
We recently read an article on cycling tips, that we are still trying to get our heads around. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding an in-competition drug test that Chris Froome failed late last year after his Vuelta victory. The cycling world has been full of opinions around if he should be suspended and whether he should have been allowed to start the Giro at all, let alone be sitting fourth on the GC. Lot’s has been said and everyone is getting a bit tired of this debate, but read this piece, “Piss take: Researchers defend study claiming Salbutamol urine test is flawed”, it offers another piece to the ever expanding puzzle.
The title of this piece from cycling tips, “The endurance bike that thinks it’s a racer”, caught our attention and got us thinking about the question of owning one bike that could service all your cycling needs.
The answer to this question will very much depend on the type of rider you are, where you ride and whether you spend your time on the bike carving up the trails or finding the tar/gravel roads that are less traveled. Which ever way you look at it I guess cyclists will always have the “n +1” problem when it comes to bike choices, but if you are looking for a bike that has adventure capabilities while still giving you the aggressive fit of a race bike, then the BMC Roadmachine 01 may be the bike for you!
That’s a wrap for this week! If you come across any interesting reads, please share them with us on social media as we always have time to catch up on the latest happenings in the cycling world. It’s almost time to head into the weekend and that means more time for our bikes!
Ride safe, till next week.
